Best Picture – Roma place to romp to victory
This market looked competitive when nominations were announced but, with just two weeks ahead, Roma 1.58 is set to be the first foreign language film to win.
Mexican director and screenwriter Alfonso Cuaron reached deep in his childhood, and his nation’s political background, to craft this beautiful movie. What is more, Netflix have played a blinder during the Oscar campaign, emphasising the labour and specialized nous that went to realising Cuaron’s vision and their case needs to prove persuasive here because it did with all the Directors Guild of America, in which it took the top prize.
According to the betting, Green Book 4.20 is the nearest rival to Roma, however it is tough to confirm when its director, Peter Farrelly, did not get a nod for Best Director. Only four films have ever won Best Picture without a Best Director nomination.
The film with the best chance of causing an upset is, for my money, Black Panther 25.00. True, it does not have a nomination in some of the other major classes – directing, acting, writing – but it might acquire support in the Academy’s enlarged, younger and more diverse membership.
