Toronto Wolfpack claim Sonny Bill Williams is interested in joining them
All star Sonny Bill Williams has voiced an interest in linking Super League newcomers Toronto Wolfpack, head coach Brian McDermott has shown.
The ensemble intend to follow up in their first approach to the global once his Rugby World Cup commitments are finished and are on the lookout for big-name signings after their promotion from the Championship.
McDermott says Toronto want to bring to perform Williams fits the bill and exactly what the Manchester United favourite failed LA Galaxy.
Sonny Bill Williams has shown interest in us thats what it is at the present time, said McDermott.
He is currently occupied with the World Cup so I wouldnt ever dare to imply he is more than interested in coming but the response was not just ano after we made contact so thats something wed like to followup
Toronto, who dont require any capital, have now been bankrolled from their formation three decades back by mining magnate David Argyle and that he stays committed despite stepping down as chairman, to bringing.
Our club might want to have a name that is absolutely international that everybody would recognise and help the profile of the sport, very similar to David Beckham did Major League Soccer, said McDermott.
But he would have to be an excellent player too, hes got to be able to do the job that I want him to perform. There would be no token player or simply a player that is headline-grabbing.
So, whoever it might be, you go mention the five highest-profile rugby players – union or league – round the world and we would be interested and our club would find those.
David Argyle will provide each one of those signings.
The Wolfpack spent recruitment following the appointment of former Leeds boss McDermott and director of rugby Brian Noble says the strategy would be to maintain.
McDermott says the club have already identified key targets and will plan to finalise deals ahead of the start of instruction on November 10.
We need at least four players – somebody in front, an external back, a rear row along with a person around the ruck area – and there are four players there that weve identified, he added.
Weve been on with recruiting all year but the fact is these people we were talking to were not sure whether we would be in Super League or not well be having more solid conversations today.
Toronto realised that their strategy to reach Super League with two decades to spare and McDermott says that the priority in 2020 will be to prevent relegation.
The reality is we want to survive first, he said. You look at what London Broncos did so season, and that I thought was really nice and they won a load of games, but the lively was that everyone around them won a lot of games as well so they finally ended up becoming relegated.
So survival for certain is the reality of what weve got to do however quietly look a little further towards the top end than the bottom end.
