Karun Chandhok: How Charles Leclerc beat Mercedes at Monza
There are certain days in this game when we watch a race is won by a motorist and it brings pleasure across the paddock. Last Sunday at Monza was just one of these days.
I really don’t think there was a person on Sunday night that wasn’t pleased for Charles Leclerc – Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas along with Toto Wolff deep down seemed to be pleased for the Monegasque star that is young!
Qualifying was amusing that is borderline and unexpected. As it was worth about half an instant, every single driver was chasing the slipstream. However, what was confusing was when the business line that is second was crossed by Carlos Sainz, he had about 30 seconds. We knew that the last sector was approximately 26 seconds so it became clear that the rest all were going to miss that the flag. This was simple for us to see about the tv screen so very the teams with all their GPS applications obtained it is remarkable.
Anyhow, Sunday delivered a Grand Prix that was brilliant. Everything threw at it using two cars in the struggle from Charles as it is place by Martin Brundle after the race, however the pressure soaked up beautifully. It was an old college, edge of the chair Monza thriller using the three demonstrating some rather high-quality driving.
Right from the opening lap, the Mercedes drivers along with Charles settled round the temple of speed into a high-speed rail. The second stint is where it really came alive, while the very first stint was about settling in and thinking about who was going to blink first. Mercedes chose their time to bring in Lewis Charles assaulted on also the Ferrari mechanics as well as his in-lap, together with the whole of Italy watching them like hawks, delivered a pitstop.
The choice to conduct their respective tyres came back to Friday, the classes and generally the style philosophy of these 2 automobiles. The Mercedes has greater downforce, meaning that they can take care of their paychecks longer. It also means they light them up faster than Ferrari and can put more energy to the tyres from their pits. The simple fact that Ferrari were not as competitive on the mediums in Spa and on endure degradation due to their downforce and Friday at Monza led them to place the hard tyre on Charles’ car.
That’s when the race actually came alive. Lewis on a set of mediums which were fully warmed up for assaulting against Charles to get a pair of tyres that are challenging that had to wind up. It had been severely high-quality driving from the men.
I believed Leclerc was particularly smart in the Parabolica on each lap employing a line where he moved a bit heavy, flirted with the edge of the trail limits, but opened the steering wheel and straightened the depart to launch himself on the start finish straight. He was playing to his and Ferrari’s strengths and knew that if he broke off a couple car lengths at the beginning of the back, then that Lewis would benefit from, he would be OK.
Lewis got very close into the second chicane naturally, and that I thought it had been right on the edge of what was an acceptable defence out of Leclerc. I really enjoy the idea of the black warning stunt out of Michael Masi, the new race director for the season along with the stewards, and it was a fantastic decision not to break up the battle but only warn Charles he wouldn’t get away with this type of strong defence on a standard basis.
Mercedes and a game played with by splitting their choices and getting Valtteri to move longer on the first stint. After a few laps of Lewis piling the pressure and Leclerc making one real mistake it had been the world champion who left an error himself. It showed just how hard they all pushed and it was to halt the car at the end of this long at a bumpy zone. This error from Lewis allowed Bottas ramp up the strain and to pick up the baton himself.
Again Leclerc didn’t waste energy mirror-watching, just soaked up the strain, and kept his head down. The Mercedes was visibly planted through the Ascari chicane along with the Lesmos but the straight-line speed of the car was sufficient to keep him ahead.
Being under the podium is completely brilliant. Watching the weapon climbs and soak up the adulation from the Tifosi showed how much it meant on Sunday to each and every individual in crimson. Since the manager of F1 team carrying the hopes of a nation, particularly at Monza, he’s got the task in Formula 1. Yesacross the season the Ferrari is not a fast-enough auto, and there’s a good chance they will not win another race this year, but that makes Sunday’s victory even more important to spend the heat off him for the short term .
The one guy in a shirt feeling joyful would be Sebastian Vettel. His spin at the Ascari chicane has been the hottest in a run of mistakes that began back in Hockenheim last year, but how he rejoined the trail and left Lance Stroll with nowhere to move was a serious misjudgement that could have had much larger consequences for both motorists. The fact that Stroll then failed more or less the same issue to the Toro Rosso originated. I am not making excuses for Lance but only saying I can understand it compared to Vettel’s shift.
It is hard to feel the European summer is over and we are all off to Singapore next for its flyaways. I fully anticipate Red Bull and Max Verstappen to be battling with the Mercedes drivers round Singapore’s streets. Lewis delivered among the best laps seen in Formula 1, last year, and now I am quite excited to see next week, whether he can be beaten by the Dutchman!
