England scrum-half Ben Youngs claims he wants something special from his World Cup following the disappointments of 2011 and 2015.
Youngs is among four giants, along with centre Manu Tuilagi and forwards Dan Cole and Courtney Lawes, in the squad that travelled to New Zealand eight years back.
England were beset by controversies since they went out in the quarter-finals in 2011, and failed to get out of the group phases.
Youngs said:”Neither of them was the outcome that I wanted.
“I believe anyone wants to look back at the end of the livelihood and feel pleased with success – and the World Cup is always the pinnacle.
“This chance here with this particular aspect is most likely the best chance I have of being in a position to return at a time of my career and say, yeahthat was something really special.”
Youngs was just 22 when he made his World Cup debut in New Zealand eight decades ago, scoring the critical try in Dunedin since England squeezed in their first group match.
Nevertheless, they fought from that point on, an team night out in Queenstown making a storm and Tuilagi .
Their defeat by a France team that had itself lost to underdogs Tonga led to the resignation of head coach Martin Johnson and also three independent reports to what went wrong at exactly what the RFU’s manager of elite rugby, Rob Andrew, afterwards called”the World Cup from hell”.
Youngs told BBC Radio 5 Live:”I am proud of the fact I have been to two World Cups before – I’m proud of 2011 because I was there, and at 2015 representing England in a house World Cup, which was an achievement in itself.
“Every experience differs. All of them teach you something. And the biggest experience from 2011 made sure you deliver on this and then keep focused on the pitch.
“There were a lot of distractions going on in that tournament that didn’t help us to provide.
“World Cups are odd things, and I don’t have the magic formula – it is game, it happens. It occurred to us.
“I can sit here and say I’m determined it will not happen again, however I can not promise it.
“But it is what coming up that matters – about this class now under Eddie Jones. There are many men who played in 2011 and 2015 who didn’t get another opportunity at a World Cup.”
Their campaign opens against Tonga in Sapporo on Sunday.
The Pacific islanders have been thumped on 92-7 by New Zealand in a warm-up game this past month .
But Youngs – that the amount nine in British history – is conscious of the danger they may pose in the championship proper.
“When you play with Tonga and Samoa and South Africa, you realize they’re considered the very physical teams, plus they seldom neglect,” he said.
“We’ve got to be certain physically we are up to the challenge – they are likely to find a whole lot of belief through how they take the ball and the way in which they handle.
“They’re big men, so we have to be smart in how we take the ball and that channels we return – they certainly will not give us any space around the ruck or getting momentum round there.
“You need to be individual. What you have to avoid is falling into the snare of fool’s gold space, where you see exactly what you think is an opportunity or space and shift it early, and then they get cover there.
“There is no hiding – you have to acquire through a team first before it is possible to make the space out wide.
“They could lure out you and then, boomthey close it down and then go quite hard at the breakdown and also make it very tough for you.”
