Mark Cavendish still keen on Tokyo 2020 bid as he prepares for Six Day London

Mark Cavendish says because he prepares to go back Day London in October, he is in racing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics interested.
After winning omnium silver in Rio 2016, the 34-year-old can aim a first Olympic gold once it yields to the Games next year.
The madison world that is three-time champion will partner Owain Doull from the Six Day event.
“Riding the madison at Tokyo remains a curiosity,” he told BBC Sport.
“Whenever on the monitor is fantastic preparation for it and Six Day racing is great since it remains true to the foundations of madison racing”
The multi-discipline Seven Day event will be aired to the BBC Sport website and through BBC iPlayer, together with the racing including points race, time evaluations, team eliminations, scratch races and the madison.
Britain’s Cavendish was”heartbroken” after being left from this year’s Tour de France by Team Dimension Datapreventing him from adding to his 30 point wins – four off Eddy Merckx’s record.
He has kept racing around the road, such as at last week’s Tour of Britain, however, he was confident of a strong showing back on the track in Lee Valley, in which he won the last of his own madison world names with Sir Bradley Wiggins in 2016.
“I enjoy riding on the trail, it complements my road riding,” said Cavendish.
“I need to accumulate over the next few weeks since a little more intensity comes in racing against guys that have been training on the track for a while now.
“It is never easy to transition from road to monitor – however, having done it for many decades, I understand what to do.”
Cavendish and Wiggins finished ninth in the madison in Beijing 2008 and the occasion had been cut from the two Olympics, but its return for Tokyo was declared in 2017.
Cycling’s governing body, the UCI, has changed the points structure of the madison, where two passengers alternative racing over 200 laps for both guys and 120 laps for most ladies, who will race it in Olympic level for the first time at 2020.
Cavendish reported the arrangement changes”take away” from the event and the Six Day madison holds more”sentimental value”, but it wouldn’t put off him racing in Tokyo 2020.
“it is a lot less strategic now. Before, you had to plan your own race now you just have to ride it,” he explained.
“However, it doesn’t affect the ability of the rider.”
Cavendish has ended second in both of his previous Six Day London appearances, alongside Wiggins in 2016 and Peter Kennaugh in 2017.
He had been forced to withdraw from a year’s event because he took a period of overall rest from cycling due to the Epstein-Barr virus.
“I’m genuinely excited to return,” he said. “I was sad not to ride year – I came down to watch and overlooked it. This velodrome is very special to me personally.
“It is truly constructed on London 2012 and Six Day would be the highlight of this year now.”
Champion Elinor Barker and Manon Lloyd will form an pairing in the girls competition that is elite.
Welshman Doull, who won Olympic gold at the 2016 group pursuit, will soon be making his Six Day debut at London, having just completed his first Grand Tour in the Vuelta a Espana to get Team Ineos.
“I’ve done a madison earlier with Owain but he has never done that a Six Day so that I’ll show him the ropes,” said Cavendish.
“We rode together in Rio and I have seen him develop as a road rider so I understand physically he will be able and we should get a decent result.”
Doull, 26, said he”can not wait” to race along with a”British cycling legend” at Lee Valley.
“I’ve heard amazing things about Six Day and will probably be determined to make it home to Wales under the lights,” he added.
Italy’s Olympic omnium winner Elia Viviani and Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan, that won one and three Tour de France stages this year respectively, will also be set to ride at Six Day London.
“It’s likely going to be the most competitive field I’ve raced with here, together with men who are the greatest sprinters of the creation,” explained Cavendish.
“I have had battles on the track with Elia before and it will be nice to get home advantage this time.
“There was a rise of big, strong sprinters for some time on the street, but it’s come around for little and quick men like myself. To have the three greatest guys like that at Seven Day is a huge thing.”
