New Kildare manager Jack O’Connor aims to recruit the county’s best footballers
The brand newest senior football manager Jack O’Connor of kildare has highlighted the importance of having the best footballers in the county.
In recent seasons, some players have chosen for a variety of reasons out of this Lilywhites squad, however, Kerry native O’Connor is eager for the other side.
“There is great footballers in Kildare. It is only a thing for us today to attempt to get the best players available into the board, and attempt to create a correct team from these,” he said in an interview with Kfm.
“My purpose is to attempt to have the best gamers in Kildare involved from the board next year. That’s not possible for personal reasons – that’s OK, and gamers go travelling or anything. You have to honor that.
“But we’ll try and find the best players at Kildare in, and then give ourselves the best opportunity of success.
“Dublin have shown the past couple of years – it is the power of the board that is pushing them to higher heights. If players get complacent and they are in a comfort zone, that’s not a fantastic spot to be.”
Under Cian O’Neill, the county made progress as they realized that the 8s, and won promotion to Division 1 of the National Football League.
But in 2018, they had been relegated in the best grade of the league, and a recurrence has been prioritised by O’Connor.
“At this juncture, it would seem like a priority to try and receive promotion from Division two, as you really need to be in with the big guns in Division 1, then attempt to combine in Division 1 since that’s where the real action is,” he noted.
“Today Division 2 is very aggressive once you see the groups that are in there. Two teams year coming back – Cavan and Roscommon – you noticed this past year that which Roscommon did. They have improved.
“It’s going to be a hard request, but that will be our first priority, to find promotion out of Division 2.”
He’s no worries that he might have lost touch, although o’Connor hasn’t managed at senior intercounty amount since 2012.
“I have been involved in some form or form right up for this season. I don’t think it’s going to be hard to transition. The game has become quicker, it has become more attritionaland it has become defensive sometimes.
“That is a challenge in itself. But that’s where the joy of training comes in – the challenge of trying to break down things like this.”
In terms of the hype and expectation that includes a three-time director joining up with a county of possible, it is seen by O’Connor .
He added:”There’s a lot of anticipation at Kerry, and in Kildare too. It is no injury. Players are driven by that. It would be a great deal worse if they had low expectation, since that could demotivate players.”
