Premier League ‘committed’ to reducing plastic use as Friends of the Earth urge clubs to do more

The Premier League insists its nightclubs are”dedicated” to reducing single-use plastics at stadiums – but environmental group Friends of the Earth is urging them to do greater.
Alongside BASIS (the British Association for Sustainable Sport), the environmental group is calling on clubs to present a returnable cup scheme in their stadiums as part of a detailed set of measures.
FOTE estimates that approximately six million beer cups might have been employed in the Premier League last year alone, while re-usable cup approaches that are successful are operating in cricket and rugby venues.
A YouGov poll of UK football buffs, commissioned by FOTE and published on Friday, found that 84% concur Premier League clubs should guarantee reusable or returnable cups can be used within their stadiums, whereas 86% concur stadiums should remove single-use plastics such as straws, sachets and cutlery where potential.
Friends of the Earth plastic campaigner Julian Kirby explained:”Soccer clubs across the UK should aim to become champions off the pitch, as well as about it, by providing single-use plastic that the boot.
“Fans need football clubs to take action on plastic. We are encouraged that several clubs have introduced measures – but we want Football League team and every Premier do everything it could to get rid of single-use plastic that was unnecessary sheeting.
“This is why we are calling on clubs to adopt Friends of the Earth’s Plastic Pledge – and – dedicate to a number of measures that major stadiums have already introduced.
“A reusable cup scheme is among the essential measures clubs could take – this measure alone could prevent countless single-use plastic cups being landfilled or incinerated every season. We expect every football club is up for the cup”
A Premier League spokesperson said:”The Premier League and also our clubs are devoted to increasing awareness . We are fans throughout the globe to take action that is favorable and decrease their intake , making small changes that will have a huge effects.
“Our clubs are already working hard to execute change both internally, and externally with suppliers and builders.
