Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool: Roy Keane, Graeme Souness and Jose Mourinho reaction
Graeme Souness called Liverpool’s triumph over Chelsea”ugly” while Jose Mourinho endorsed his old club doctrine under Frank Lampard.
Roberto Firmino header and trent Alexander-Arnold’s thunderbolt, both sides of a disallowed Cesar Azpilicueta equaliser, saw the Celtics leaders open a two-goal lead inside 30 minutes at Stamford Bridge.
The dazzling solo effort of chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante set up a tense final 19 minutes but the Reds held on for a 2-1 success that was their 15th Premier League win in a row and places them five points clear of Manchester City.
Here’s whether their early benefit over City has some significance and how our Super Sunday pundits responded to Liverpool’s success.
“They gained ugly today and got off with it. They were teams in the halves. From the first half, they have been fantastic – very threatening. However, at the second half for the past 30 seconds, they had been hanging on. The midfield could not keep hold of the ball and they were under pressure.
“For the goal, Fabinho appeared like he was towing a caravan. Is that they had a hard game . Chelsea will think that they should have got something out of the game”
“If you win games, you need to hang there. You won’t actually analyse it, when you return after these types of matches on the bus. You move onto another match. They’d have accepted it if you told them prior to the match you would win 2-1 although there are times. If they win the league they won’t look back in this result thinking’we might have done better ‘ – they will just be delighted to have the decoration in their hands, although it is just September.”
“it is a significant outcome. Since it’s an opportunity if they go away to six teams, Liverpool and manchester City will already be considering the fixtures of each other. Both groups, whether they buy there or nothave to aim for 100 points. You can shed 14 points. A draw isn’t a result that is fantastic. To Arsenal, Manchester United, you would go off in the past and you would be pleased with a point. City have changed that – drawing away from home is not a fantastic result.”
And what about the functionality of Chelsea? Their manager was in the studio and although he hopes that the fans do not begin accepting shedding, he is on board with Lampard and club’s doctrine.
“I hope that they don’t get used to it [losing] – that is the main thing. When you begin accepting beats because your team play well along with your players gave it their best to be proud.
“I believe when you become accustomed to it, big clubs cease being large clubs. They shouldn’t get used to it. It shows folks are ready to accept what the year is going to be under a manager who is one with and a supervisor that is potentially top and ready for the season.
“The reality of the numbers state Liverpool have been 10 points ahead of Chelsea – they are not going to struggle for the name. Let us encourage the philosophy of giving time for the supervisor and the players to work.
“I like their thoughts. I think that their type of play is being accommodated to what soccer is like nowadays and adapted to the profile. Within this instant , they are far from being able to compete for names .”
